Nel is well-known throughout the world for his groundbreaking contributions to digital strategy and artificial intelligence (AI), but his remarkable career goes well beyond technology. He became the first South African to make a solo circumnavigation of the world in a single-engine aircraft in September 2024, a feat that cemented his reputation as an adventurer. Nel was born in South Africa, and his early interest in aviation was sparked by seeing crop dusters fly over wheat fields. His insatiable curiosity ultimately led him to fly his own plane and complete a feat that just a hundred people have ever accomplished: a solo circumnavigation of the planet. Nel chose the difficult westbound route, and his 55-day voyage took him across 14 nations, 19,870 nautical miles, and 167 flight hours.
Nel’s adventure put his mettle to the test as he flew alone over huge oceanic expanses and hostile terrain. A 14.5-hour journey across 1,900 nautical miles of ice-ocean between Japan and Alaska’s Adak Island was one very taxing segment. Later, Nel thought, “That stretch felt like staring into infinity.” “You understand how big the world is and how fleeting life is.”

Nel characterized the weeks after his return as being characterized by “post-expedition malaise,” a feeling of emptiness that explorers often experience after accomplishing significant objectives. He was able to contemplate and find companionship among like-minded travelers through regular meetings at the Explorers Club and relationships with other Earthrounders, and pilots who have also traveled around the world.
Attending the centennial festivities of the first world flight at Boeing Field in Seattle was a highlight of this time. There, Nel told his tale to other pilots and thought about how risk, loneliness, and self-discovery are common experiences.
Although Nel’s achievements in aviation are astounding, his influence on the tech industry is just as noteworthy. As the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of CloudFactory, Nel has been a strong advocate for the “human-in-the-loop” concept, combining human supervision with AI automation to improve the moral and useful uses of AI. While completing an MBA at the MIT Sloan School his research focused on leveraging technology to empower marginalized people around the world and advance financial inclusion.
Nel made waves at organizations like Ocrolus and McKinsey & Co. before joining CloudFactory, where he developed enterprise AI strategies and resolved challenging machine learning problems. His early work at YouNow, a live-streaming service, and MXit, Africa’s biggest mobile messaging platform, showed that he could expand technology across a variety of markets and cultural contexts.
